Role
Do you relate to others' struggles? Are you passionate about making people lives' easier? Do you enjoy solving problems through design concepts? If so, you could be a UX designer.
UX Designers create a positive and intuitive experience for users when interacting with a product, website, or application. Their primary goal is to understand the needs and desires of the user. Then, they design interactions that meet those needs. All while providing a seamless experience.
UX Designers use research that they conduct themselves or with the help of the UX Research team. This is how they gather insights into the user's behaviour. It also helps them identify the user's preferences, and pain points. Then they'll use our design system to create wireframes and prototypes.
Throughout the design process, UX Designers will work with other teams. This usually includes User Researchers, UX Writers, Developers, and Product Managers.

How long have you been at Sun Life? What was your career path to get to this point?
I have been with Sun Life for about 2 years. I worked as a Flash Developer for a game firm for the first four years of my career. Then decided to switch to web development.
I had no plans to pursue UI/UX design. Then a media company offered me a chance to try the role. The UX component of design was still new at the time. So, I conducted my own research, attended a ton of seminars, and studied on my own.
It's nice to see how UX design varies from one company to another. Now, I've been in UX/UI Design for almost 10 years, and there's still much to learn. It's always a pleasure to launch products that address user needs.
What is the best thing about working at Sun Life?
Sun Life really shows their appreciation to their employees. They let employees know their worth and the value they bring to the organization. I'm also happy to work with a vastly talented XD practice within the organization. And I love the diversity of our teams, with a wide range of cultures across the globe.
What UX topics are you most passionate about?
I like understanding the users and gaining empathy through user research. User testing helps me understand if I've solved the right problems. Another topic I love is experience design principles. They help guide practitioners on how to address user pain points.
What advice would you give to other UX designers?
Never be too attached to your original ideas. Always keep in mind that design is iterative, alive, and constantly changing along with the user's needs.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I illustrate comic strips and love to spend quality time with family and travelling.
