A directory for design resources, starting with the highlight of Sun Life's design system. We'll be adding more resources to this page in the future, so check back often!
Think of a design system as a library filled with reusable elements and patterns. It has a clear set of standards and is used to build any number of products.
That said, there's a difference between design systems and style guides or component libraries. A style guide defines the elements that all applications can use. A design system manages those elements by giving them context and guidelines.
There are three pillars that define Sun Life's design system:
Sun Life's design system is our single, unified design system. The design system creates components, documentation and patterns that give us a common language among our teams. Having a design system improves consistency and the speed that we move. The pre-designed templates, patterns and components allow us to grab and go.
We value research at Sun Life. We use it in all stages of the projects we work on, including the design system project.
We use an audit process to create components and patterns for our design system. In the discovery phase, we look for common experiences across our products and evaluate them. Then we conduct competitive analysis.
Once we have a full list, we go to the solution phase. That's where we work on designing a single template. We user-test everything to evaluate and measure usability before making a final pattern recommendation.
