Michelle Huynh

UX Researcher, Client Experience Office, Sun Life Canada

Why were you interested in a career in UX research?

During my undergraduate studies, I had a wide variety of passions including research and psychology. I wanted to get into a field that combined all of them in a hands-on and practical way. I came across design thinking and user experience through my studies and wanted to learn more. Then I did an internship with Sun Life as a UX Research Specialist. That's when I realized that I wanted to pursue a career as a UX researcher. I love being able to apply user research to peek into people's minds. It's how we bridge the gap between users, companies and stakeholders.

Do you have a favorite research methodology? What is it and why?

My favourite research methodology would have to be unmoderated usability tests. They're a classic! Over the course of my role, I've become very familiar with them. These are the tests I use the most here at Sun Life.

What is the most memorable moment working at Sun Life?

There have been lots of memorable moments, so it's hard to pinpoint just one. However, I think the one that I view most fondly would be wrapping up my first big study. I felt very accomplished having finished a study from start to finish, and it was well-received by everyone. This work is rewarding. Especially knowing that what I'm doing can make our products and services more accessible and inclusive to our end-users.

How would you describe the Sun Life culture??

The culture at Sun Life is bright and warm, just like its name. When I first started here, I was able to easily transition because everyone was so welcoming and friendly. People are always more than happy to help you. I am very appreciative of my team and how well we're able to work together and support each other. Sun Life also encourages personal development. They support you by providing many opportunities to help you level up and grow in your role.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I like reading in my spare time. My favourite book at the moment is “Crying in H Mart” by Michelle Zauner. I also enjoy spending time with my corgi, Cheddar.

Bill Franz

Principal UX Researcher, Technology Product - Product Design, Sun Life U.S.

Why were you interested in a career in UX research?

UX researchers are storytellers. Great researchers can craft stories that resonate and introduce us to different perspectives and experiences. I've always been an artist and have a passion for sketching and drawing the world around me. I studied storyboarding and animation at art school in San Francisco. Moving into UX Design and Research allowed me to continue telling stories. I see myself as a perpetual student, always searching for something new to learn and explore.

Do you have a favorite research methodology? What is it and why?

I enjoy interviews, job shadowing, and other opportunities to interact with people. These conversations help me understand their perspective and challenges. I always have a plan when I lead conversations. But the rabbit holes and unexpected discoveries can be the most intriguing and enlightening.

What is the most memorable moment working at Sun Life?

I'm still new, having joined Sun Life in August 2022. But I've enjoyed the research work on the PinnacleCare project. I've spoken to people from all over the country, learning about their work and challenges. People love the chance to tell their stories. I'm constantly discovering something new.

How would you describe the Sun Life culture?

Sun Life is excited about research and its potential to raise our level of confidence in decision-making. I'm also fond of the “roll up your sleeves” attitude I've witnessed at Sun Life. We find ways to collaborate and get things done.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy being outdoors. Whether it's for a hike, a run, or just a walk to the local coffee shop. I also love to travel. In high school, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Germany. Since then, I'm always planning my next trip, whether it's visiting family and friends, or exploring somewhere new.
