UX Writer

Role

Are you passionate about writing? Do you enjoy crafting content for users that will guide them through an experience? Then UX Writing may be for you.

A UX writer creates copy for apps, websites, and other digital products that help users navigate a product.

UX writers are behind the words you see on a website or application. They write:

  • Menu labels
  • Definitions
  • Buttons
  • Chatbots
  • Error messages and instructions

Their goal is to create copy for users that's clear and easy to understand. That includes people of different abilities, ages, gender identities, and backgrounds. UX Writers also ensure their writing reflects the product's brand voice and tone.

UX writers work with team members across business lines including Design, Product, Brand and Marketing.

Mel Bennett

UX Writer, Client Experience Office, Sun Life Canada

How long have you been at Sun Life? What was your career path that led you here?

I joined Sun Life in the summer of 2022. Before Sun Life, I worked at a Big 5 Bank, and before that, an ad agency in Toronto.

I graduated with a combined Bachelors in History and Mediterranean Studies. I got my ESL teaching certificate and worked in China and Spain. When I was ready to come back to Canada, I explored different career options. I found copywriting and pursued a Masters certificate. Writing for digital spaces allowed me to learn many practices — accessibility, short and long form writing and user experience.

What do you like the most about UX writing?

Thinking about a user's preference and delivering on those expectations. It's incredibly satisfying to anticipate and solve problems for Clients.

What excited you about working at Sun Life?

Sun Life is developing a quality UX/CX division. It feels like we have the flexibility, creativity and drive of a start-up. All with the backing of a major Canadian institution. I like building things from the ground-up, so moving to Sun Life was a no-brainer.

What's your favourite project that you've worked on at Sun Life?

We created a slider to gamify the product selection process. Which is a lot of technical speak for: We improved the Client experience for one of our product selection tools. Finding the right product should be exciting, energizing and fulfilling. We wanted a tool that matched those emotions.

We changed the selection tool to be more interactive by switching from a drop-down menu to a slider. There was a lot to balance, like technology constraints, accessibility and cross-device functionality. It was totally worth it. In the end, our user testing agreed — sliders are more fun!

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Knitting, writing, gardening and collecting cool rocks.

I've been at Sun Life for 5 years now. Before joining the UX team, at Sun Life I'd been mostly in marketing and communication roles. I was looking for a new challenge and an opportunity to broaden my skills.

What do you like the most about UX writing?

I like building something helpful and useful for people. We make things easier for people during significant life experiences, whether it's retiring or changing careers.

What excited you about working at Sun Life?

The reputation. Before joining, I had several friends and colleagues who've worked here. All of them told me how great the culture is. The focus and support on a healthy work-life balance. Forward-thinking creativity. And commitment to innovation.

What's your favourite project that you've worked on at Sun Life?

My favourite project has been working on Sun Life Choices. We're continuously improving the application. We make it easier for group members to transfer their workplace savings to a Sun Life plan when they change jobs or retire.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work, I love spending time with my family, cycling, and cooking. I'm also a big film and music fan.
